WE ARE NOT TEACHING SOMETHING NEW.   FAR FROM IT! WE ARE MOTIVATIONAL BY CHALLENGING THOUGHT THAT WE CAN BE SO MUCH MORE.  AND BY ENCOURAGEMENT  THAT WE AS INDIVIDUALS HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THE LIVES WE ARE LIVING AND GOING TO LIVE.

WE TELL THE STORY OF OVERCOMING IN THIS LIFE AND WE ARE MULTIGENERATIONAL... TALKING TO ANYONE WHO IS READY FOR CHANGE.

WHETHER WE ARE YOUNG OR NOT SO YOUNG, WE ALL NEED SOME ENCOURAGEMENT ALONG THE WAY! YOU WANT TO HAVE AN UPBEAT TEAM WHICH KNOW WHERE THEY ARE GOING TOGETHER? START WITH THEIR HUMANITY... AT CHURCH!

(There is not present any statistical category, that I have found, for people like Don who go on to live a heathy, productive life!)

Success! Message received.

Of 100% of those suffering from any kind of Stroke, 13% are Hemorrhagic Stroke and 40% or more, die within 48 hours or less.  The rest will live out their lives severely handicapped, most likely in a nursing home.  To look at it another way, there is not present any statistical category for people like Don Forss who go on to live a heathy, productive life.

"I was pleasantly surprised of how well you have recovered from your stroke. As a neurologist practicing for 40 years, your degree of recovery has been exceptional.  Your positive attitude and your family support has been very helpful to your improvement. I believe with the same positive thinking you will continue to have a productive and happy life.

You certainly are a great role model for many stroke patients."

I first met Mr. Forss when I was asked to evaluate his speech and language skills several years ago. At that time, he had been discharged from the hospital and was recovering at home. He was not able to walk independently and had to use a wheelchair. He was not able to stay by himself and had to have either family or friends stay with him. I quickly learned that he had a vast number of friends and finding someone to stay with him was not usually a problem.

I evaluated his speech and found that he had a moderate dysarthria. (This is defined as a muscular weakness or paralysis that can make speech distorted and difficult to understand). He was also demonstrating a mild to moderate language problem with recalling specific words to express himself. He was seen for several weeks in the home. He worked extremely hard and completed all homework assignments. He was determined to regain as much of his previous skills and life as possible.

After a time, he was transferred to the outpatient program where I continued to work with him in the speech and language areas. What always impressed me about Mr. Forss, was his determination and especially his spirit and positive attitude. He was nearly always in good spirits and optimistic. He rarely became discouraged or asked “why me”. He displayed an amazing sense of humor and was encouraging to the other patients around him. Mr. Forss is a very spiritual person and it is my belief, that this was also a major factor in his attitude and recovery.

Mr. Forss continued to receive outpatient speech and physical therapy for approximately a year. During this time, he improved to the point where he was able to present some sermons and interact in his church activities. Although he was not active in outpatient therapies, I have followed him periodically through Facebook and the newspaper and am thrilled to hear that he is now teaching at a two year college. He continues to be an inspiration to his family, students and community. Our paths recently crossed and he continues to impress those around him with his optimism, humor, and spiritual attitudes.

MOVE THAT MOUNTAIN

On April 5, 2008 Terry, my wife and I, after taking a nap, we were going take a take a walk. I was up and she was waking up. When I came into the bedroom I said, “I do not feel right." My right side felt weak. Terry, being a nurse practitioner, took my blood pressure and said, “We have to go to the hospital right now!” By the time we made it to the car, Terry was holding me up to get me into the seat. I was resting my head on the window, unable to lift it up. A half an hour later, in the Emergency Room, looking at my middle daughter Naomi, trying to say, “Don’t worry”… but the words just didn’t come out. That was the last time I would see anyone for ten days as I slipped into a coma. I was the victim of a massive cerebral aneurysm or a hemorrhagic stroke. Little did I know that I was going to start my life over! I was fifty-four and would face death twice.  Now I am sixty-two years old, teaching college, and still healing from my stroke.  But there is too much to tell here.  I am available to tell my story and perhaps you will be inspired!
